Creating a space for your little one to play and grow in should be fun! Whether you want their room to be as colourful and magical as they are, or prefer to add a sprinkle of magic here and there with muted tones, you might find yourself a little stuck on how to bring their vision to life. While a room they love now and for years to come may seem like an impossible order, it doesn’t need to be! You can easily bring colour and magic to your kids’ bedrooms with these seven simple ideas.
Start with a theme
Whether it’s colour, location, story or favourite movie or TV show, picking a theme for your kids’ bedrooms is the perfect place to start – we’re sure they have plenty of ideas for you.
By focussing on a theme around their favourite movie or characters, you’ll easily be able to make decisions based on colours, patterns and even furniture as you turn their room into a magical space. If they don’t have a favourite show or character, you can always go for a favourite colour or pattern like stars or dinosaurs!
A colour theme can bring their room to life, while a story, favourite movie or TV show theme can give your kids a sense of escapism into their favourite world. Don’t forget to ask for their input – make sure the theme reflects their interests and it will grow with them over the years.
Set a backdrop and add art
Sometimes it’s best to keep the base neutral and then build on with colours. This goes for wall colours! If you’re planning to give the bedroom walls a fresh coat of paint, go with a neutral colour like white, tan or grey, to give yourself a backdrop to work with.
With this base, you can easily add and change wall decals, art, and other wall décor over time as their interests change. If they really want a pop of colour, go for a feature wall instead of painting the entire room!
Art is the perfect way to add colour and set their theme. If you’ve gone with your kids’ favourite movie or TV show, hang matching posters or graphic prints. If you’ve gone with a colour theme, choose art of different hues. If it’s a location theme, like a magical forest, add forest or tree-themed wall decals and stickers.
Create magical nooks
Don’t worry, you don’t need to hire a construction team to do this. A magical little nook can be easily created in your kids’ bedrooms with a few budget-friendly items.
If your little one loves all things fairy-tales, you can create their very own fairy village in their bedroom. Set up a “fairy corner” with decorations like wall art, twinkle fairy lights and a themed rug . You can also buy some cushions and blankets that can be used for fort building in the corner, or to snuggle up with a good book. A teepee tent can also provide a fun space to enhance their imaginative play.
Make storage magical
Storage is an absolute necessity for kids’ bedrooms due to the vast amount of toys, books, crayons and hair accessories they have – and it doesn’t have to be boring. If your kids are graduating from the crib to a “big kid bed”, buy a bed with built-in storage, or a loft bed with plenty of shelves and storage space (which are also great for fort building). Blanket boxes also make great “magical secret hiding places”.
Magically stack with an open bookcase
While an open bookcase is another great storage option, you can make it magical by stacking your kids’ books by colour to create fun, colourful patterns. You can also use the bookcase to both stack books and store décor that don’t have a home anywhere else. If you’ve chosen a story theme, you can incorporate the bookcase as part of a reading nook.
Finish with magically lighting up the bedrooms
Finish strong by bringing some magical lighting into the bedroom. If your little one is afraid of the dark, you can easily buy a nightlight to help them fall asleep without worry. If you’re looking to add a little magic, opt for a projector night light, which can project beautiful images, such as night stars and ocean waves onto the wall or ceiling. Fairy lights are another great way to provide some cosy lighting.
Another unique way to magically light up your kid’s bedroom is placing glow-in-the-dark stickers on the ceilings, which has the added benefit of decorating the ceiling at the same time.
With so many ideas to get you started, it’s easy to transform your kids’ bedrooms into magical and colourful spaces they will love for years to come.
