Cleaning your upholstery

One of the biggest jobs in your home is cleaning your upholstery. If you are fortunate enough to have more than one sofa suite, or you have a fabric sofa and a leather sofa, then you know that you want to take pride in these pieces of furniture. It takes time and effort to get upholstery to look its best, but it takes even more time and effort to keep it that way.

Cleanliness improves your sofa, but it can also create a good environment for your guests to relax, which is exactly what you want. Cleaning a couch is not difficult, and as long as you have the correct fabric shampoos or non-toxic leather conditioner, you’ll be able to bring it up to perfect cleanliness in no time at all. However, if you’ve never done it before, here are the steps that you need to make sure that you can clean your upholstery like a pro.

Remove all of the fabric protective products

If you’ve got any traps for dust mites, fleeces or anything like that on your sofas get everything taken off and pop into the wash. Taking the covers off of everything is important, because then that allows you to get into the actual cushions and the creases beneath. If your cushions detached from the couch, take these off and air them outside.

Use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment

This is the easiest way to suck up any water, dirt or shampoo back from the cushions. Bissell upholstery cleaners are often a popular choice for people who want to clean their own upholstery, because you can use shampoos and conditioners into the fabric and into the corners and then suck up all of the water so that it drives easily. If it’s a sunny day, and you have the space, you could move your sofa outside and allow it to dry.

Follow the instructions on your sofa cushion covers

If your couches are fabric and not leather or vinyl, then you should usually remove the covers, pop them into a cool wash setting and then hang them out to dry. This will be the easiest way to clean the couch, because then you can work on the corners and the cushions underneath. Use vacuum cleaners to remove dirt and dust and empty out all the canisters each time you have vacuumed anything.

Reattach all the cushion covers when they are dry

Once the cushion covers on the sofa covers are dry from the wash, put them back on. If they need it, press and iron them to correct any creases. One of the best reasons to use your outside washing lines is because of the creases that can turn up if you use a tumble dryer. If you are cleaning a leather sofa and you haven’t removed any covers, then simply make sure that they are wiped down with a clean microfibre towel to dry them of any conditioner or shampoo.
