How to keep the refrigerator clean?

Kitchen is the most wanted room in any house. Aside from the dishwasher and other tools which make our lives easy, the fridge is by far the appliance that’s most used. Food, drinks, medicines and so on, we keep them all in the fridge and, in time, you might notice that smells and drips are  accumulating without any warning. Luckily, there are so many tips to prevent that. Read on to discover some tips on how to keep the refrigerator clean.

Keep it clean

I know this is not news to anyone, but the first step in prolonging the life of a refrigerator is to keep it clean. Is that simple! Make sure there are no plates with food or leftovers to prevent odours. Clean the jars and bottles to prevent any drippings on the shelves and keep all the food covered. Vegetables should be out of bags and washed. Make sure you toss every week the remains which will not be consumed anymore.

Use organizers for your refrigerator

It might seem a difficult task, but once you get started you won’t stop. If you have a big family, labeled baskets will make the food accessible to all the members. Try keeping similar foods in the same area. Another way is to organize main food ingredients for specific days of the week in their own basket. This way, all you need to do is to simply pull and cook based on what’s needed for that day.

Keep it fresh

Bad smell are sometimes a problem and it might be difficult to prevent it no matter how hard we tried.

  • Sodium bicarbonate has a multitude of uses, one of them is to neutralize the odours in your fridge. Place a box of baking soda on a shelf and let it work. The unique properties of sodium bicarbonate make it very attractive to all particles and it eliminates the bad smells.
  • Some might say that an open container of dry oats in the fridge will neutralize odours even better than baking soda does. Place it on the top shelf and let it do it’s job. Replace it once every few days, more often if the fridge is constantly full.
  • Use a deodoriser. There are so many options available on the market and one will definitely work for you.
  • Squeeze a lemon on a towel and wipe the shelves. Have in mind that lemon needs a few hour to absorb the smells. Another trick with same result is to put few lemon slices in a bowl and leave it in the fridge.

Clean it periodically

A refrigerator needs a deep clean inside out every 3 to 6 month. Empty all the food, wash the shelves and drawers according to the manufacturer recommendation so that you remove all the bacteria and bad smells.
