We live in a day and age when most people don’t think they really need a study and do any work they do from how from bed with their laptops, in the living room or on a desk in their bedroom. Additionally, many wouldn’t really want to dedicate a whole room to be their study or just don’t have the room to spare. Still, if you have the space and the need, a study can be one of the most pleasant in useful rooms in a house or an apartment if decorated and furnished properly.
So let me share some important tips for you to be able to make the best of your study. In the end, you want it to both be absolutely dreamy while allowing you to be efficient and productive in it when you decide to use it for its main intended purpose.
Don’t approach it as an office
No matter if you do a lot of work from home or not, you should not approach your study as you would an office. Don’t forget that this is a room in your home and it should feel like one even if it has a more productive general purpose than just relaxing. Most offices tend to lack personality and if you model your study at home as the typical function-only oriented room that an office usually is, you are likely to end up with bland and uninspiring results.
So don’t’ be afraid to put in a more personal touch and add a few things that would make it both more cozy and a better reflection of your personality. Things you can add to make the study feel homier are bookshelves full of literature, a small sofa or some inspiring art on the walls. Don’t be constrained by the clean office aesthetic and go for something that is going to be as much you as possible
Look for light
If you are actually going to do some work, you should make sure that you are going to be doing it in an environment that doesn’t tire you and doesn’t make it uncomfortable in any way. You should position your desk in such a way that you are going to get enough light when reading papers or a book, but that also wouldn’t make it difficult for you to use a laptop. Having enough natural light is something that always makes a space feel much more pleasant to be in and you should strive for your study to have that quality as well. A flexible solution might be installing blinds or drapes that would allow you to control the light when you don’t need it or when it’s impairing your ability to see your computer’s display, but that would also allow you to let plenty of natural light in when you are reading a book or a magazine.
Make room for guests
Most people start decorating their studies with the presumption that they are going to spend most of the time there alone and they often forget that they might want to be able to have other people in there with them. If you really put your heart into decorating your study, it’s very possible for it to become one of your favorite rooms in your whole home so you want to be able to show it off. Having meetings and inviting friends to spend time there will come naturally at a point and it’s important to make your study guest or visitor friendly. For instance, you should be able to invite a Chinese tutor to join you for a session of comfortable learning or you should be able to sit and have a pleasant drink discussing life with your best friend.
So if you are considering turning one of the rooms in your home into a study, don’t hesitate to go for it and make it your own and you could be rewarded with a pleasant place to both do some work and unwind.
