For many of us, the bedroom is where we spend most of our time; but living in a tiny bedroom can make you feel claustrophobic, like you’re sleeping in Japanese capsule hotels night after night.
If it’s going to be somewhere that you actually enjoy spending time – more than just a place to lie down and sleep – it’s important that it has enough space.
Getting some inspiration for how to maximise the space in your bedroom can help you transform a room that you never want to leave. Luckily, you don’t have to visit a furnishing showroom in order to get some ideas.
We’ve put together some of the easiest and most effective ways to amplify your space. Without further ado, here are our top tips on how to make a small bedroom seem bigger.
Start with the layout
First things first – it’s time to rethink the layout. Less furniture means more space, so get rid of anything that isn’t absolutely necessary. Wherever possible, switch to multi-functional pieces so that you don’t reduce the practicality of your room.
For any must-have furniture, try to place it all against one wall. But there’s no hard and fast rule – try out different ways of positioning the furniture and see what makes you feel like the room is less cramped. Ultimately this is about feeling more comfortable and the layout that best achieves this is personal to you.

Use colour and light
Dark and gloomy colours can make even a huge room feel small. On the flip side, bright colours have the opposite effect. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to paint all the walls white. You can implement your favourite colours. Just make sure that you do so in a thoughtful way, by picking brighter hues that are better at reflecting light around the room.
In order to maximise this effect, make sure that you keep your window space as clutter-free as possible. Keep ornaments to a minimum and choose plain roller blinds that take up as little space as possible when retracted. This way, you’ll make the most of the natural light that comes in through the window.

Maximise storage
If you feel like your belongings are taking up all the space in your bedroom, then you’d benefit from improving the storage space in your bedroom.
Consider investing in a new bed frame that allows you to store clothes underneath it or else an ottoman to go at the foot of your bed. Free up space by installing some simple shelving for smaller items such as books, decorations and photos.
